Some people like to live in the past. They imagine past eras as being simpler times that were free from the cares and struggles of today. To which I say, whatever floats your boat, though if you were able to time travel to those idealized ages you’d probably find a lot of unhappy people wishing for a better situation.

But while living in the past might be fine for people, it can be a disaster for an organization’s performance management systems. If the only way that your business can discover, manage and address application performance issues is after they have happened, then you are likely going to have a lot of unhappy users and customers (who may quickly become former customers).

Not surprisingly, Aberdeen Group research into performance management has shown a clear benefit for organizations that take advantage of real-time capabilities to detect and respond to performance issues as they happen.

By looking at performance from a real-time perspective, these businesses are able to not only ensure higher levels of application uptime and performance, they are also able to more effectively leverage other leading capabilities of performance management.

Also, by being able to respond to performance issues in real-time, these organizations were able to create reliable and high-performance applications that left customers and end-users very or extremely satisfied when it came to application performance.

It really seems to be a no brainer. Of course it’s preferable to detect performance issues as they occur and have the ability to address these problems as quickly as possible. But a lot of classic performance management solutions are designed around analytics and tools to discover the cause of problems that have already happened. While these capabilities are valuable, our data shows that they need to be coupled with real-time capabilities in order to provide the highest levels of application performance.
